Conscious-Unconscious Relations & the Power of an Imaginal Ego
While I am passionate about making music, interests in the mysteries of the heart led to a Ph.D. in depth psychology, My research follows a line of psychologists beginning with Freud and then moving through C.G. Jung, to one of Jung’s followers, James Hillman—who founded archetypal psychology. The depth of Jung’s “complex psychology,” also called “analytical psychology,” is compelling for its numerous interconnected aspects and emphasis on an archetypal basis of mind. Beyond what we repress (the “personal unconscious” or Freudian “id”) Jung discovered a deeper layer of the unconscious which he called both the “objective psyche” and “collective unconscious.” This realm is home to structuring principles of the psyche (archetypes), which we enter the world with and through which our experience is lived.
The manner in which Hillman furthers Jung’s research and method, with his conception of an “imaginal ego” and praxis of “soul-making,” connects the work of artists, musicians, and poets to the field of psychology. The intersection of creative process and psychological wellbeing is of particular interest to me. The topics listed above are areas of study I enjoy exploring and discussing with others. If you would like to learn more, I am available for individual and small-group sessions, conferences, lectures, talks, and workshops. Please contact me if you have any questions.
